Training and education is an essential part of the industry and recently PHABRIX were delighted to be able to help student Luke Tresidder achieve his goal of receiving a First Class Honours in Television Production Technology from Southampton Solent University.
Luke says he has wanted to be in TV ever since he was younger and decided a career behind the camera was the best way forward for his practical talents. Working as a technical assistant at IBC in 2018 and 2019 gave him further insight into industry directions and an idea for his final dissertation.
“Both years SMPTE 2022-6 and SMPTE 2110 were everywhere,” he says. “While we covered the basics of IP broadcast in lectures, I wanted to learn about SMPTE 2022-6 and SMPTE 2110 in more depth as a lot of companies are transitioning towards IP broadcast systems rather than SDI systems.”
But while Luke’s idea of testing and evaluating video/audio synchronisation through SDI and IP networks was a good one, the practicalities of being able to do it on what he refers to as ‘no budget’ was a challenge. Which is where PHABRIX came in.
“Halfway into the project I realised that sourcing equipment capable of up to 10Gbps data rates and the rest of the equipment required was not a feasible option,” he explains. “Then a contact at Arena TV put me in touch with Nicola at PHABRIX. Nicola was happy to help, and she invited me to the PHABRIX headquarters to get hands-on with the PHABRIX Qx testing device.
Sadly, the pandemic stopped that plan, but Nicola offered an online demo and screenshots of the demo which saved my project as it gave me the results, I could compare against SDI data.”
While the pandemic has changed many plans, it didn’t stop Luke gaining a well-deserved First on his course from Southampton Solent, and he’s now looking to get his career underway with that all-important first step on the career ladder.
“After working so hard to achieve a First, I am actively looking for a job in the industry. Ideally, I am looking for a job in Outside Broadcasting, but with the current situation I am open to all opportunities.”
